Venezuela

Today was crazy but lots of fun. I worked all morning on cleaning the house and getting things ready for the 16 - 18 year old boys from church to come over to our house and get a taste of Chris' mission experience in Venezuela.
About 12:00 the box of imported ingredients that Chris ordered came...he was kinda stressing it wouldn't make it. :)
The goods...

Then starting about 2:00 pm I started cooking. I am sure it wouldn't have taken so long, if I knew what I was doing. BUT it was fun to learn and I really didn't want to mess things up. I had Flan while living in Spain, so I knew what it should at least look like, and I knew it needed to set for a while, so I started there. Have you ever tried to dissolve sugar without adding anything to it? Sugar is an odd substance. I heated up a half cup of sugar until it was brown and carmalized. Then I poured it into four different glasses and it immediately hardened. BUT if you have ever had Flan, it usually has a runny carmel substance ontop of it. Turns out when you pour the Flan liquid over the hard sugar, it melts again and it turned out great!
I am SO THANKFUL FOR MY PRESSURE COOKER!!!! Instead of pre-soaking the black beans 12 hours I pressure cooked them for 2 minutes. How can that be?!? IT WORKS THOUGH! One of the boys even said they were the BEST beans he has ever tasted. Hello! we live in Arizona, that's gotta being saying something. :)
Got the beans pre-soaked and then I browned and cooked the steak.
Chris came home about 4:00 and started getting to work as well. He finished off the beans and I pre cut all the onions and peeled and diced the tomatoes and started the rice.
Pretty much, I finished cleaning and Chris made fried platanos (plantains) shredded beef and Arepas. Arepas are made from pre-cooked white cornmeal. He loves them.
BUT even more, he love MALTA. Malta is a drink in Venezuela that is VERY popular. More popular than Rootbeer is here. But can be compared to Rootbeer because most people there would not like Rootbeer, as most people here would NOT like Malta. I think the initial smell right before you drink it is a huge deterant. Then as you drink it, you realize it tastes as much like baby food yams as you thought it smelled like baby food yams. :) BUT CHRIS LOVES MALTA. lol He was very excited when he ordered it on line, and super excited when he came home and saw it in the fridge. He drank one immediately.

So, I think it would be fun to do more dinners like this. It was so fun to listen to Chris talk about Venezuela to the boys. You really get to know a part of someone when they share personal experiences and it was fun to see the boys hopefully get excited to serve missions.
SO I think I need to start a food group thing...huh. if only the next month or 10 weren't booked...

Alli-I told Chris we should have Kyle make us Paella and talk about his mission next time you guys are in town!!! (Chris says it's just because I want Paella...I said, AND...j/k I also love to hear mission stories, and anything to do with Spain ;) ) Maybe I need to import some food too!

I missed this post! You're killin me. It's 10:40 at night, but after reading this I had to eat! I do miss the food from Florida - there were people from all over the world there and I was spoiled!
