Terrible Mom, Terrible Teeth

Okay, so I am not a bad Mom, but one day last week, I felt like one, and wanted to crawl under rock.

Wesly and Travis brush their teeth every night before bed. We haven't been the best at this routine, but more recently we have been pretty diligent.

I have taken Wesly with me to my dentist once, and the Dr. looked in his mouth and just gave him a little bit of an idea of what his visit may be like in the future. He didn't do anything big, and siad he looked great.
Now I know this wasn't very long ago. At the most, one year ago. (AND I completely have faith in my Dentisit, I go to Phoenix still to see him.)

Last week Wesly got some meat stuck between his teeth, I told him I would help him get it out with his toothbrush, by the time we got upstairs it was already gone. The next day he got food stuck in the same spot. I was trying to floss the food out for him, and I realized there is a HUGE HOLE in the front of his molar. :( how did I ever miss this?

The next day I made a same day appointment for him to see a pediatric dentist.

The verdict... 14 cavaties. HELLO!
He will need 4 caps (mini root canals) and lots of fillings.

Oh, and AFTER insurance it could cost us almost $3000.

We have talked to 4 dentists and they all say the price is right, and that we have a few options for putting him to sleep or numbing him up...this is going to be fun....

Like I said, our new best friends...
FLOSS and TOOTHBRUSH
If anyone knows where to get a good deal on floss picks, let me know! I think they must be worth it if it is cheaper than $3000.

I am kind of hoping this is because Wesly doesn't get enough calcium (as he has never been able to drink Cow's Milk). At least that would give me hope for Travis, who I have yet to take in...maybe there is hope! Until then, brush, floss, take extra calcium, OH and the Dr. gave us a perscription for floride tablets that Wes can chew before he goes to bed at night. I'll let you know if they seem worth it!

Let me know how everything turns out. We loved having Travis and Nathan over here last week so when you do take Wes in bring the other boys over here to play!

Aw...poor boy. That makes me nervous because I haven't been the best at the tooth brushing routine. After that story, I will be now.

oh Kati! that's horrible. I had really bad teeth as a kid but luckily my uncle was my dentist and I'm sure he gave my parents a "deal" on all the caps and fillings I had to get. I've been thinking alot about the dentist lately and need to find a good one. Who do you go to?

Holy snap! Have you thought about getting a double check from another Dentist??? When I was in Jersey a dentist told me I has 12 cavities. I had him fix three...when I got back home, but dentist told me I didn't need anything done...

Just so you know, I have a crown on one of my teeth, and the dentist told me not to use a pick or anything that you have to pull back *up* to get out - because it loosens the crown. So, you'll need just plain old floss to stick in, and then pull out sideways. Poor Wes!

Yikes! I feel horrible for him and you during and after that doctors visit. I hope it goes well.

I need to be a little more diligent as well! I better start supervising brush time a little better!

This is a horrible story. I can't believe how much it will cost. It's amazing that Wes hasn't been having lots of toothaches.

Hey Kati, this may seem like an odd comment but I may be able to help with the whole cost thing. Before I had kids I managed a few dental offices and have a knack for treatment planning and insurance benefits. I was able to save my sister in law at least $1500 or more out of pocket by figuring out her benefits and contract dentist stuff. Let me know if you want me to take a look at it. katiemayberrykm@yahoo.com

I also found out just before we moved that Marana doesn't have flouride in their water, my pediatritian perscribed my kids the flouride tablets as well.

Good Luck!
